What God Hath Promised

        God hath not promised skies always blue
        Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through,
        God hath not promised sun without rain,
        Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.

        But God hath promised strength for the day,
        Rest for the laborer, light on the way,
        Grace for the trial, help from above,
        Unfailing sympathy, undying love.

        Life's Highway

        Today I walked the highway
        With faltering step and slow;
        My load seemed very heavy
        And long the way to go.

        A comrade walked beside me;
        And as I glanced his way,
        I saw that he, too, carried,
        His burdens through the day.

        I smiled and reached to help him,
        I lited half his load;
        My own seemed strangely lighter
        As we trudged down the road.
